The Echunga Dojo was opened in October 2002, by Glen Doecke, since them with the help of Julie Doecke and Steve Neale, both assisting Glen with the running of the class, the club has quickly established itself as major Martial Arts club in the Adelaide Hills. The classes are held on Tuesday nights, kids 6-7pm and the adults from 7-9pm at the Community Hall in the Main Street of Echunga. The Echunga club provides the Hill areas with the opportunity to experience the Martial Arts and has generated allot of interest in both kids and adults, attracting students from around the local area and towns.

The kids class has generated allot of interest very quickly, and has built a good strong foundation of kids dedicated to learning and progressing in the Martial Arts. Many kids started in the first year the club opened and are still training strong. The kids class focuses on skills needed in every day life, balance, confidence, strength, focus and discipline while having fun and getting fit. The self defense aspects focus on every day scenarios and how to deal with them, school yard bullies, street smart self defense and of course stranger danger.

Some people think teaching Martial Arts to kids is just teaching them how to fight, this mis-conception couldn't be further from the truth. The Martial Arts gives the kids a sense of confidence that allows them to spot the warning signs of trouble and take evasive action before the trouble starts, the skills they learn on the physical side of the art are clearly explained that they are not allowed to be used for fun, or showing off, they can only be used when they are in danger of being hurt and there is no one else (an adult) around to help them, the last resort.

The adults class at Echunga has also built itself up with a wide range of students from all walks of life, men, women, young and mature students. Makoto Ryu karate is unique in the techniques taught can be adjusted to suit the individual attributes and abilities, this allows the students to perfect the moves that suits their own needs and perfect them into a working self defense system. The adults classes are more intense and involved than the kids class and students find it very challenging.

Glen believes the major strengths of Makoto Ryu is the endless search for new and better ways of learning, teaching and applying techniques, he currently hold a level 2 certificate in NCAS (National Coaching Accreditation Scheme) run by the Australian Sports Commission http://www.ausport.gov.au/coach/ncas.asp and is keen to keep progressing within the scheme.
