The Pt Broughton Dojo was opened in February 2003 by John Kerry, Pt Broughton is located on the York Peninsular South Australia north of Adelaide. The class is conducted in the community hall in the main street and is on Tuesday and Thursday nights, kids from 6 till 7pm and the adults from 7pm till 8.30pm. For more details contact John on 0417 871 866 or just drop into the hall on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

The kids class has generated allot of interest very quickly, and has built a good strong foundation of kids dedicated to learning and progressing in the Martial Arts. The kids class focuses on skills needed in every day life, balance, confidence, strength, focus and discipline while having fun and getting fit. The self defense aspects focus on every day scenarios and how to deal with them, school yard bullies, street smart self defense and of course stranger danger. The kids karate syllabus was developed to specially suit the needs of kids, and has proven very successful in the child's development.

Some people think teaching Martial Arts to kids is just teaching them how to fight, this miss-conception couldn't be further from the truth. The Martial Arts gives the kids a sense of confidence that allows them to spot the warning signs of trouble and take evasive action before the trouble starts, the skills they learn on the physical side of the art are clearly explained that they are not allowed to be used for fun, or showing off, they can only be used when they are in danger of being hurt and there is no one else (an adult) around to help them, the last resort.

John started his Martial arts career in 1985 at a club in Pt Broughton and trained for several years reaching his black belt level before having to move to Adelaide for employment reasons. John continued his training in the city under Glen Doecke (Founder of Makoto Ryu) and also had experience with many other systems including Ju-jitsu, Judo, Tae-Kwon Do and traditional karate. John also had experience in tournaments with the NAS (National All Styles) competitions, competing strongly in the areas of Kata and Weapons.

John believes the major strengths of Makoto Ryu is the endless search for new and better ways of learning, teaching and applying techniques, he currently hold a level 1 certificate in NCAS (National Coaching Accreditation Scheme) run by the Australian Sports Commission http://www.ausport.gov.au/coach/ncas.asp and is keen to keep progressing within the scheme.
