The Brahma Lodge Dojo was officially opened in June 2007 by Dai Sempai Simon Leonard. Simon has been a student under Renshi Glen Doecke for eleven years and has recently decided to take his martial arts in a new direction by opening his own Dojo.

The Brahma Lodge Dojo operates Monday and Thursday nights teaching only adults from 7 til 8:30pm.  The Dojo has quickly built up a strong core group of adult students dedicated to learning and progressing in the Martial Arts. Students range from teenagers to mature age, both male and female.

Simon and his black belt Father, Robert, are also looking at opening a specific mature age (45yrs +) class at Brahma Lodge in 2008. Robert a 1st Dan Black Belt and soon looking at attempting his 2nd Dan, believes the Martial arts has many befits to the mature aged person, especially after completing his 1st Dan grading at 62 years of age. He also received the IAOMAS (International Alliance of Martial Arts Schools) certificated of recognition for his efforts.

Classes at Brahma Lodge are quite physically demanding, yet very fulfilling, and lots of fun.  Simon chooses to focus often on fitness, and as such his students adapt well to the rigorous demands of martial arts training.

Makoto Ryu karate is unique in that the techniques taught can be adjusted to suit the individual’s attributes and abilities.  This allows students to perfect the moves which suit their own needs, and allows them to develop their own unique working self defense system.

Simon who lives in Salisbury, began his martial arts career in the early 1990’s at the Para Vista Dojo and reached his current rank of 2nd Dan black belt in 2005.  Simon has had experience in tournaments with the NAS (National All Styles) competitions and has competed against many students from many different styles. He is now using this experience and knowledge to organise and run the Makoto Ryu inter-club competitions

Simon is also involved in assisting Renshi Glen Doecke with development the weapons syllabus for Makoto Ryu black belts. This involves modern day street wise techniques to the full on traditional weapons grading’s for the Dan (Senior Black Belts) ranks within the system. The weapons syllabus is providing a platform for the senior students of the system to further sharpen their skills within the martial art training curriculum.
